Aviation, agriculture, industry, design, and the swinging 1920s. This is the origin story of the City of Opa-locka, Miami-Dade County's eighth oldest municipality located in the northern part of the county just south of Miami Gardens.
The historic walking tour, presented by the Opa-locka Preservation Association, focuses on the founding years of the famous planned community, detailing the vision of founder and American aviator Glenn Curtiss, the design of Moorish Revival architecture, as well as details on current plans to save and elevate the community's historic identity.
The free walking tours take place in the downtown area, Opa-locka's original plat, is approximately 1.1 miles, and takes approximately 1.5 hours. All guests are asked to wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the experience.
Tours begin promptly at 10 a.m. on their scheduled dates, with all tours beginning at the Opa-locka Tri-Rail Station located at 480 Ali Baba Avenue, Opa-locka, Fla. 33054
