## After well over a decade of campaigning, and four years after a vote by the city council, two colonial street names in Wedding are finally being changed. The ceremonies to on Lüderitzstraße and Nachtigplatz will take place at 11am and 12pm on Friday, December 2. (Petersallee, honoring the mass murderer Carl Peters, is not being changed yet.)
Later that afternoon, we will do our (Anti)Colonialism tour in a celebratory mood. Our tour ends in Wedding We will talk about the people behind the old street names (Adolf Lüderitz, Gustav Nachtigal, Carl Peters) and the people behind the new ones (Cornelius Fredericks, Rudolf Duala Manga Bell, Anna Mungunda), and the struggles that were necessary to make the change happen.
We have been doing this tour for more than a decade, and are very happy to have made a tiny contribution. ##

Germany isn't well know as a colonial empire. But in just a few decades at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Kaiser's troops massacred hundreds of thousands of people across Africa and Asia.
Today, Berlin is full of reminders of the city's colonial past. A few of the city's worst street names are being changed. In our (Anti)Colonialism tour, we look for signs of oppression and resistance, including:
– the beginning of the Brandenburg slave trade
– the division of Africa at the Berlin Conference
- anti-colonial resistance in the 1920s
– the racist history of Berlin’s “African Quarter”
– today’s struggles to change colonial street names
If you would like to attend a tour, please send an e-mail to: [email protected]. A real name is not necessary — just the date and the number of people. This is to make sure we have enough people (at least 5) but also not too many (no more than 25). You will get a confirmation e-mail within one day.
Our tour will be meeting in front of Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz. That is opposite the Brandenburg Gate and next to the Hotel Adlon (S-Bhf Brandenburger Tor). We will meet at 17:30 and leave by 17:40.
After walking around Mitte, we will go to Wedding. This will require an AB ticket for the BVG (please get that ahead of time). Our tour will be ending at 19:30 at U-Bhf Rehberge.
Suggested donation is 10 euros per person, but any contribution is appreciated and none is required. You can also pick up a signed copy of our new book "Revolutionary Berlin."
We ask that you only come if you're fully vaccinated. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail: [email protected]
