Jazz Age jazz hands to Streamline Moderne – a West End wander looking at architectural indulgence and elegant embellishmentsThe late 1920s, often referred to as The Jazz Age, was a colourful, lively era and a boom time for theatre, nightlife and entertainment. Flapper girls, top hats, cocktails, nightclubs and restaurants. Central London had never been so busy.
In the interwar years, specifically from 1924 to 1937, thirteen theatres here were newly-constructed or remodelled, with eight opening in 1929–30, each boasting more impressive decor and better facilities than the last.
Most of these theatres were new-builds on sites of old shops or businesses. The others were upgrades as well-established theatres were redesigned and remodelled to keep up with the Zeitgeist of that time. This is clearly evident at The Savoy and The Adelphi theatres where the best architects and interior designers of that time were employed to impressive effect.
This flamboyant yet forward-thinking, moderne and spectacular style has come to be recognised as 'Art Deco' and this walk illustrates perfectly how Jazz Age geometrics gradually morphed into Streamline Moderne. We'll admire the exteriors and, where possible, we'll peek into some foyers. You'll learn about the buildings, look at their individual details, and hear about the architects and designers who created them.
-The 4 hour walk starts near Tottenham Court Road and ends near Piccadilly, with a 1hr refreshment break* in the Seven Dials / Covent Garden area.
