Welcome to the Sixteenth of our incredibly popular ‘Walking for Well-being’ events.
Life is tough right now for all of us. We’ve jumped from the pandemic into a cost of living crisis and our mental health and well-being has well and truly taken a battering.
For the last few years I have been meeting a friend of mine for regular relaxed dog walks; no pressure to walk too far, to talk too much, just to be outside, in the present, being active, calm and grounded. I have found it’s had a really positive impact on my own mental health. So much so that I think it would also help others. So, in conjunction with our group - Dog Owners of Plymouth - we are going to start up ‘Walking for Well-being’, a completely free of charge walk once a month open up to anyone who would like to attend with a focus on positive mental health.
It’s well known that physical activity releases endorphins in the brain that energise you and create positive feelings. It reduces stress, boosts mood, and increases mental energy. But when you’re feeling overwhelmed, worried or isolated, it can be hard to find the motivation to get active, and even just going for a walk can feel daunting.
Thats where our four legged friends can help - having a dog forces you to get outside, which starts a long chain of positive effects for your mental health. Additionally, walking with other dog owners can be a healthy distraction from the stresses of life in general, not to mention a great way to make friends and feel part of your community.
Joining our walking group will encourage you to get outside and enjoy the benefits of being active, while also leading to conversations with other dog owners and like minded people, helping you to stay socially connected to others.
You don’t even have to own a dog to join! The walk is completely FREE and open to everyone to come and enjoy a Low Tide sunset stroll at the beautiful Bovisands beach. ***Dogs must be of a friendly nature and depending on numbers may need to be kept on a lead for sections of the walk.***
Meeting point is Bovisands Carpark, next to the Cliff Edge Cafe, 1800hrs, Wednesday 1 May 24.
I look forward to walking and talking with you.
