Free tours on top of the weir at Lake Cowichan! Learn how this vital structure is important for the environment and why it needs to be updated.
The Cowichan Watershed Board and Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society (CLRSS) welcome you to come on out for an amazing view and education about our watershed. Stand high up on the spill gates of the weir, accompanied by a Watershed Board biologist and the weir's current owner/operator, Domtar/Catalyst Crofton.
From this unique vantage point, you will learn about how water flows in our cherished watershed, from the mountain tops, down into beautiful Lake Cowichan, and all the way to the ocean, nourishing countless human and ecological communities and cultures on its way, and supporting jobs at the Crofton mill.
You will learn how water levels and flows have changed in the past 20 years, adding stress to the ecosystem, and why the weir needs to be replaced to store more water for the health of the River.
All levels of government and the current weir owner are playing a part in the project to keep this cherished Heritage River flowing. Learn more at cowichanlakeweir.ca.
Tours leave at 10am, 11am and 12:30pm from the picnic shelter behind the Info Centre in Saywell Park, Lake Cowichan. We will also have educational booths and hot tea! Join us!
