Explore Canterbury’s Coastal Environment - Brooklands & Te Rauakaaka Walk the Talk is a free guided walk series that features guest experts sharing insights into local environments.
Our next event takes place at Brooklands Lagoon (Te Riu-o-Te-Aika-Kawa) and Te Rauakaaka regional park, two of Canterbury’s most significant coastal sites. Brooklands Lagoon is a 270-hectare estuary supporting over 100 bird species and important saltmarsh ecosystems. Learn about the area’s dramatic transformation following the Canterbury earthquakes and its ongoing ecological significance after the red zoning of the former suburb.
At Te Rauakaaka, Environment Canterbury’s 212-hectare regional park, discover the saltmarsh and the Styx River mouth nature reserve. This former Māori food-gathering site is being enhanced for biodiversity and recreation.
Peter Langlands will share insights on environmental research and communication, while Councillor Joe Davies will discuss his advocacy for increased regional parks funding and the million-dollar biodiversity fund he secured for Christchurch.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about Canterbury’s precious coastal environments with local experts.
