About this Event
July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month. Smile Like Ethan Foundation (SLEF) is a 501 C3 organization whose mission it is to bring awareness about cleft lip and palate in the community. This foundation is set up as a partnership between parents and health professionals to bring support to families and to provide specialized baby supplies in under developed countries. SLEF also educates children and their families on how to cope with the many challenges they face.
We believe that every child deserves a future filled with hope. According to studies, every three minutes or for every 700 children, a child is born with a cleft. Here in America, when a child is born with a cleft, the first few weeks of this child’s life, a medical team is already in place to give proper care for the newborn. A special team includes ENT specialist, plastic surgeon, nurse, and orthodontist. Unfortunately, a child who’s born with cleft and lip palate in any under developed country especially in small villages, faces greater challenges such as difficulty eating, speaking, and hearing. Additionally, some kids face rejection by their peers and many also endure senseless bullying.
We will start out at North Miami Beach City Hall, for a socially distant and safe event to promote Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month. You can also create a poster with our logo to show your support! We will have water bottles and T-shirts at our starting point from 9:00AM-11:00AM
