Let's stroll around Rottingdean, soak up the summer and get creative with some drawing stops along the way!
About this Event

Join us for a fun day out at Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean to walk and draw the beautiful village and surroundings! Take in village life and the lovely summer with your sketchbook in hand. Whether you're an experienced artist or just enjoy doodling, this event is for everyone! Meet fellow sketchbook enthusiasts, get inspired by nature, and learn how to fill your sketchbook. I'll be sharing what materials to use, how to fill a sketchbook and overcome the fear of the white page and tips for observational drawing. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to combine exercise and creativity in the great outdoors this summer!

We'll meet at Kipling Gardens on the green for a chat and from there we'll make our way on a easy 3km walk around the village and up to the windmill ( a gradual uphill walk but we'll take it slow - all abilities are welcome!) And then back down to the beach for a ice-cream or refreshing pint at the local pub.

What to bring with:

  • Water/ Drink, snacks and sun protection ( Hat, sun cream etc. )
  • Sketchbook - Any size, I would recommend an A5
  • Drawing Materials - can be a pencil, watercolours, paints or ballpoint pen! Anything goes!

Recommended Materials:

Sketchbooks:

  • Daler Rowney Sketchbooks from Cass Art
  • Royal Talens ( A bit pricey, but lovely paper!)
  • Cass Art collection sketchbooks ( Great quality - perfect for beginners)
  • Moleskin Sketchbooks ( Pricey, but lovely to draw and easy to use out and about)

Pencils & Paints

Like I've said - anything goes! So it's quite hard to say what materials are best, therefore I've just recommended a few if you're keen to get going with sketching from life.

  • Faber Castell coloured pencils ( You can start by buying some of your favourite colours separately and build up your range in this way)
  • Derwent Inktense Pencils ( Lovely saturated colours, great to play around with for watersoluable colours.)
  • Watercolour set ( Windsor & Newton are great if you're invested in your art but if you're just starting out, a more cost effective water colour set will do the trick!)
  • Tombow Brush pens - they are great for blocking out big areas of colour and to get a paintly effect)
  • Reuseable brush pens ( These are great for filling with water, makes it super easy to paint on the go!)

Joan Herlinger recently relocated to Brighton after living in Paris for five years, and before that, San Francisco and Sydney.

Coming from a creative family she strongly believes that the arts and creativity are necessary for a happy and productive life. She holds a degree in Fine Art (painting) from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and recently completed her M.A. in Illustration at Falmouth University in the UK.

As a multi-form illustrator, the materials and style she uses are defined by their resonance with the narrative that she is working on; sometimes working in felt and embroidery, watercolour, watercolour marker, gouache, collage, ink, acrylic and oil paint, pencil as well as digital media. Her creative practice is built around mark-making and layering of diverse materials to create imaginary worlds. The foundation of her work is observational and imaginative drawing, which helps her explore her narratives. She never leaves her flat without a sketchbook.

She is currently working on a picture book, which she is both writing and illustrating.

While living in Paris, Joan was a coordinator of a popular drawing group called the Paris Drawing Meetup, who draws every Sunday afternoon in the museums, parks and gardens around the city
