With the dawn of the Reformation, the status of tradition has been a source of much theological controversy. Those who affirm the divine inspiration of tradition, such as in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox theology, argue that the Holy Spirit guides the Church throughout history, ensuring that its traditions faithfully transmit and interpret divine revelation beyond the written text: this tradition can be exposited by the councils (or the Pope) in an infallible way. Critics, especially within Protestant traditions, contend that only Scripture (sola scriptura) is divinely inspired and infallible, while tradition, though valuable, remains human and fallible. This debate raises broader questions about the sources of religious authority, the role of historical continuity, and how believers discern divine truth within the living community of faith.
