Vulvaverse is an underground festival in Rotterdam dedicated to heavy music and activism, organized by the band VULVA. The focus is on musicians, artists, and speakers who are usually underrepresented on stage. Vulvaverse is a music festival showcasing the experimental side of heavy music.In addition to the main programme in the Arminius Church, VULVA organizes an extensive side programme during the festival that addresses the social and activist aspects of the event. Through talks, discussion panels, lectures, and dancing, we aim to constructively create a “Vulvaverse”: a universe where all topics can be discussed and everyone is included.
For 2024, our social focus will be on sex work in the Netherlands. Due to the ongoing ambiguity and the fact that sex workers often operate in the shadows of society, we aim to shed some light on this issue. Shame, ignorance, and resulting insecurity are matters we intend to address through discussions and inquiries, providing information on this day. To achieve this, we will once again enlist the help of an established organisation with the necessary knowledge and expertise.
Following the success of the first edition of our festival “Vulvaverse” in August 2022, we quickly realised that this is something that needs to happen annually in Rotterdam. The diverse audience, exciting experimental heavy shows, and the activist, social, healing, and educational aspects of Vulvaverse make it a unique festival that is missing from the cultural landscape of Rotterdam (and even beyond). Our mission: visibility, representation, and inclusion for marginalised acts/artists/speakers/organisers/creators.
