The Vintage Parlor Orchestra returns to Wealthy Theatre! Since its inception in October 2018, VPO has produced 23 programs in various Grand Rapids venues performing classical music in non-traditional spaces. The orchestra specializes in giving performance opportunities to local composers and musicians from the West Michigan area while giving the audience a more approachable classical music experience.
Our 24rd program begins with the Overture No. 16 in A minor by Johann Kalliwoda. Kalliwoda is often seen as a missing link between Beethoven and Schumann. Although he is relatively obscure today, his works were quite popular during his lifetime and were even performed on the very first program of the NY Philharmonic in 1842.
Next is the premiere of Andrew Bergeron's "Ancient Trees" Flute Concerto. This is the second premiere of Andrew's works this year, following his Symphony No. 1 in February at Creston Brewery. Carmen Maret, Andrew's wife and co-founder of Folias Duo, will be the soloist — implementing piccolo, flute, and alto flute. Each movement was inspired by trees the couple encountered while touring the U.S.
After intermission will be Symphony No. 1 in G minor by Carl Nielsen. He was 27 when he composed this work, and the symphony is known for its novel progressive tonality (ending in C major) that would later define his compositions. Nielsen performed with the 2nd violins during its premiere in 1894.
Grab a beer and experience classical music like never before! The night will feature a relaxed atmosphere, clapping between all movements, a 35 member chamber orchestra, and an open concession stand! We will also be engaging our audience in a game of Random Instrument Challenge. Instruments are courtesy of our sponsor, Meyer Music.
