About this Event

1945 Hyde is a stunning example of adaptive reuse, transforming a 1920s cast concrete garage into modern housing while preserving its historic essence. By replacing parking spaces with residences, this project bridges San Francisco's architectural heritage with forward-thinking design.

The event begins with Luke Ogrydziak of OPA, the project architect, sharing insights into the renovation. He will discuss how the design maintains the historic building's character by contrasting its raw, layered structure with sleek, contemporary interventions. This juxtaposition enhances the building's historic strengths while introducing modern elements in a bold yet harmonious way.

The focus then shifts to Unit #2, "Vortex." Initially an unfinished space, the loft was designed by OPA with a vision for the future, featuring an open plan that balances privacy with seamless flow. Its innovative design combines familiar regular forms and dynamic movement, with walls folded and pinched like a single sheet of folded paper to shape the space. This required pioneering architectural techniques in both design and fabrication, making Vortex a model of modern ingenuity within a historic shell.
