In late March 1461, a great Yorkist army gathered at Pontefract Castle ahead of one of the greatest battles in English history. By Palm Sunday 29 March 1461 two great armies faced each other across Towton Vale. The future of the English throne was at stake. Chroniclers tell us that 80,000 men faced each other that fateful day. But, is that true? The Battle of Towton has long gone down in history as the bloodiest battle on English soil. New research is changing the way we think about its infamous role in English History. So, was Towton the 'greatest and bloodiest battle' on English soil? Or, can another Yorkshire conflict lay claim to that title?
