Would you like to be part of an exciting new project at Chattahoochee Bend State Park? The Friends of Chattahoochee Bend have been selected as a test site for the American Chestnut Restoration Project. We have received 21 chestnut (7 Chinese Chestnuts and 14 American/Chinese Chestnut hybrids) seedlings from the Georgia Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, and we need to get them planted.
Seven planting sites have been identified as “test” sites based on soil type, amount of sun, drainage, etc. Three seedlings will be planted at each site and then monitored to see which sites perform the best. This will eventually lead to a larger number of seedlings being planted. Once our 21 seedlings are planted, we will still need to erect fencing to keep rabbits and deer from munching on the young seedlings. We hope to get all the seedlings in the ground and fencing erected Saturday.
So, what do we need from you? Join us this Saturday, November 30, at 10 AM at Chattahoochee Bend State Park. We’ll be meeting at the Maintenance facility (first building on the left after you pass the Ranger’s residence). We have all the tools and supplies; all you need to bring are yourself and a pair of work gloves. Easy, right?
I hope you’ll join us for this exciting project and, if you’d like to learn more about the efforts to restore the American Chestnut to the American landscape check out the American Chestnut Foundation’s website – tacf.org
