Living shorelines are a nature-based approach to shoreline management that aims to stabilize the coast while enhancing the ecosystem. These projects typically involve the strategic use of native vegetation, along with breakwaters to provide erosion control and habitat enhancement.
This new project incorporates oyster reef ball modules, setting a model for sustainable habitat restoration techniques. The alternative breakwater material provides structural support while minimizing the potential negative environmental impacts.
This shoreline project at Sebastian’s Riverview Park is a multi-habitat restoration initiative in partnership with the City of Sebastian, the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, 11th Hour Racing, and local community members.
