Folk/Americana/Singer-Songwriter - Admission by DonationVolkert Volkersz will present a concert of original songs and guitar instrumentals at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater on Wednesday, October 8. Doors open at 6:30pm with the show starting at 7pm. Opening for Volkert will be “The Love Grubs,” consisting of Brian Hassler and Elise Dahlberg, who were members of the Snohomish High School Jam Club during the period Volkert advised the group from 2005 to 2016. Admission to the concert will be by donation at the door. The theater is located at 1211 4th Street in Snohomish. For more information email [email protected].
Volkersz spent 38 years in the Snohomish School District as an elementary music teacher, elementary librarian, and finally as the librarian at SHS. He has been performing folk and Americana music since the 1960s and began writing songs at age 15. After a period of writer’s block, Volkert “found his voice” again in 2006 while performing at the former Wired & Unplugged Coffeehouse in Snohomish. During that period he hosted several popular shows including tributes to the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. When the coffeehouse ceased operation in 2008, he helped transition the open mic to the then-new Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater. There he hosted tributes to the Great American Folk Revival and to Woodstock.
Volkert retired in 2016 and moved to New Hampshire where he quickly got involved in the local acoustic music scene. For five years he hosted a popular monthly open mic in Dublin, the town he now calls home. He recorded some singles, including his interpretation of Robert Frost’s “Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening.” His new album, entitled “It’s Cocoa Time! Songs from the Seasons with Opa Volkert,” is geared to “children and their grownups.” The album, and the singles, have been featured on the NHPR Folk Show. This concert will include songs from the album, but will mainly focus on newer songs he has written that appeal to adults.
Volkert Volkersz has appeared at the Keene (NH) Music Festival, hosted the Dublin Folk Festival, and has been the featured performer at numerous venues in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. He recently opened for nationally known singer-songwriter, Lui Collins. Prior to moving cross-country he appeared at the Northwest Folklife Festival and Bumbershoot (both in Seattle), the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, and Kla-Ha-Ya Days in Snohomish.
