SAVE-THE-DATE:
Sunday, May 5th from 8:00am-12:30pm (approximate end time)
Our Chapter has another unique MEMBERS-ONLY opportunity! We have been invited to co-host, along with the Volcan Mountain Foundation (VMF), a BioBlitz at a newly acquired 600+ -acre property in the San Felipe Valley on the east flank of Volcan Mountain in San Diego County. The property, known as the Peckham Keenan Wildlife Sanctuary, is several decades removed from its use as a dairy cattle ranch. The land is now permanently protected as a refuge for animals with VMF accepting responsibility for preserving habitat and providing humane stewardship. The property possesses diverse habitats - perfect for a BioBlitz - with perennial ponds, riparian woodlands, montane forests, and desert transitional scrub!
The goal of this BioBlitz is to identify as many species of flora and fauna as possible, thus helping the Foundation better understand the diversity on this beautiful land. This is for Chapter Members only and priority will be given to professionals, early career professionals, and students seeking careers in biology. Some members from the San Diego Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will also be joining us to beef up our plant list.
The property is known to have steep slopes, so good physical condition is essential for safety in order to participate. Afterwards, those interested can join for lunch in nearby Julian!
Space is limited, so please only RSVP if you are committed to attending. An email with more details will be sent out upon confirmation of membership. This is a members-only event with a focus on identifying as many species of flora and fauna as possible. We ask that you leave friends, family, children, and pets at home. The meeting spot is accessible by 2WD vehicle, however you will be driving along a dirt road. Carpooling is encouraged and will be coordinated after RSVP.
