About this Event
Jessie Montgomery - Starburst (2012)
Jessie Montgomery - Chemiluminescence (2025 - Scottish premiere)
Ainsley Hamill - Songs from Not Just Ship Land (2017/21)
Norrie MacIver - Songs of Govan Old (2017/21)
This extraordinary orchestral programme brings together three amazing talents. In 2017, The Glasgow Barons introduced Ainsley Hamill and Norrie MacIver to the Govan Reminiscence Group, commissioning them to write new songs about local heroes and heroines and sing them in Govan with the orchestra. Here, for the first time, they come together for an evening of utter delight.
Ainsley Hamill is one of the UK’s most distinctive and versatile singers, known for her remarkable voice, storytelling, and emotive style. Hailing from the West Coast of Scotland, Ainsley has built a career celebrated for its authenticity, merging traditional Scottish folk with a modern touch. Her Govan songs, appearing in the album "Not Just Ship Land", moved her into a more introspective and thematic songwriting style, with a focus on feminism and equality.
“The Gaelic cross-over voice of his generation". Norrie MacIver is a singer of range, clarity and melody, and although firmly rooted in Gaelic tradition, he has a voice completely at ease with a backbeat, effortlessly exploring rhythm and modern idioms.” - Calum MacDonald, Runrig. Norrie hails from Carloway in the Isle of Lewis and currently lives in Fife. From 2016 to 2025, he performed worldwide as Skippinish's lead singer, including Edinburgh Castle in front of 8000 people. We released our album with him, "Songs of Govan Old" in 2021.
Jessie Montgomery is a GRAMMY® Award-winning composer, violinist, and educator whose work interweaves classical with folk music, improvisation, poetry, and social consciousness. Named Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year, her profound works have been described as “turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life” (The Washington Post). Starburst's exploding gestures and gentle fleeting melodies create a kaleidoscopic world of rapidly changing colours. Chemiluminescence interprets light, agitation, reaction, and frenetic interplay, exploring her interest in connection between music and the natural world.
