We warmly welcome you to the seminar Voices from the South: Challenges and Solutions of Global Journalism 🗞️🌏This two-day seminar brings to Helsinki unique perspectives from journalists working in Central America, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Myanmar. The discussions will focus on two key themes: the working conditions of female journalists and the safety of journalists in the Global South.
Seminar speakers include Abigail Hernández (La Sala) and Maryórit Guevara (La Lupa) from Nicaragua; Farah Omar Nur and Habiba Alasow from Somalia; Catherine Apalat (Mama FM) from Uganda; Ziada Kilobo (Media Council of Tanzania) from Tanzania and MAY from Myanmar.
🔸Day 1 – Challenges and Survival Kits of Female Journalists (Tue 23 Sept, 13:00–16:30)
The first day highlights the position of women journalists and the ways women practice journalism under conditions which restrict women’s rights and freedom of expression. Speakers will share perspectives on:
▪️experiences and solutions for sexual harassment at workplace
▪️the impact of hate campaigns on the work of female journalists
▪️working in exile and organizing under restrictions on freedom of expression
▪️coping strategies and cross-border cooperation among women journalists
🔸 Day 2 – The Impact of Digital Suppression on Media Freedom (Wed 24 Sept, 13:00–16:30)
The second day dives into journalism safety and the threats linked to the digital environment. The speakers are exiled journalists who share concrete strategies for practicing journalism in countries with restrictions on freedom of expression. Topics include:
▪️ restrictions on freedom of expression and surveillance of journalists
▪️ the impacts of spyware and social monitoring programs on journalists
▪️ fake journalists on TikTok and their consequences for democracy
