About this Event
As part of our 90th Anniversary, join us for light refreshments and an evening of programming at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park, to explore the Anzac Memorial building at night and hear words from our past brought to life.
‘Five minutes and we charge’
This August, the diary of Private James Smith is given voice by an actor. In a dramatic reading of this extraordinary record from the Anzac Memorial’s collection, accompanying audiovisual elements will transport you to the tense moments before the Battle of Lone Pine. Smith’s diary offers a grim depiction of life at Anzac behind the façade of his surprisingly chipper tone.
Stroll out into the Memorial’s halls to the sound of echoing verse as the space is activated by live readings of poetry. The poems of Leon Gellert and others will be performed in the parts of the building where they resonate best, both in terms of acoustics and meaning.
Finally, discover the corners and recesses of the Anzac Memorial’s art and architecture at a time of day most visitors won’t experience. In this private after-hours tour, you will discover enduring symbols in the corners and recesses of the Memorial’s art and architecture that oft go unnoticed.
