- Play recordings of iconic jazz vocalists (e.g., Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong).
- Identify and discuss improvisation examples within the songs.
2. Vocal Warm-ups (10 minutes)
- Breathing Exercises:
- Diaphragmatic breathing techniques.
- Vocal Exercises:
- Simple scales and arpeggios focusing on pitch accuracy and dynamic control.
- Jazz Rhythm Exercises:
3) Simple Melodic Improvisation:
- Teach students to use the melody as a base for improvisation.
- Explore embellishments (trills, slides) and variations of the melody.
- Basic Scales and Modes:

4) Call and Response Exercises , One student sings a short melody (call), and the other responds with their own improvised line.
- Rotate partners so everyone has a chance to practice both roles. Choose a simple jazz standard from the Fakebook. Each student presents their improvised version of the jazz standard. Or their chosen material. If you have lead sheets, bring them , if none, that’s OK too.
