About this Event
Vocabulary Hunting: Gamifying Vocabulary and Comprehension
Join me at the Ottawa Public Library - Nepean Centrepointe and learn how to boost engagement by “gamifying” ways to build vocabulary and comprehension skills.
We know that students with beginning vocabularies can struggle when taking part in our classroom reading and writing activities. What can be surprising are the types of words that are causing them difficulties. I’ll share some of the common categories of vocabulary that I am noticing are barriers to my beginner/multilingual/struggling readers when reading UFLI or other decodable texts and some of my “gamified” classroom strategies and activities that are helping them to increase their confidence and comprehension. Classroom-created strategies to support student vocabulary and comprehension in other specific areas (e.g., dialogue, verbs) will also be discussed. As a bonus, I’ll share my students’ MOST requested game - a quick vocabulary diagnostic in disguise that you can use with any grade-level content area you teach!
