Linguistics Olympiad problems (LOPs) are a special genre of puzzles that present linguistic features and phenomena in an encrypted form. These problems are used in the International Linguistics Olympiad and related national olympiads and consist of a scaled-down corpus of sentences/phrases/words representative of certain linguistic phenomena. From this, the solver must infer/deduce a primitive set of grammatical rules of the language and then translate a new set of elements. In recent years, large language models (LLMs) have shown impressive performance on many language-related tasks, raising the question of whether such systems can also solve Linguistics Olympiad problems. And if so, how?
In this talk, I bring together two perspectives: empirical research on the performance of LLMs on LOPs, and pedagogical insights from training students for the International Linguistics Olympiad. I discuss why current AI systems often struggle with these problems despite their apparent fluency, focusing on issues such as memorisation and tokenisation.
By comparing how humans and machines approach the same tasks, the talk argues that Linguistics Olympiad problems offer a unique lens on the distinction between pattern recognition and genuine reasoning. I conclude by reflecting on what these findings imply both for the future of AI and for the educational value of linguistics competitions.

Vlad A. Neacșu is a PhD student at the "Iorgu Iordan - Al. Rosetti" Institute of Linguistics of the Romanian Academy. His research focuses on the use of linguistics olympiad problems in academic research. He is a member of the International Board of the International Linguistics Olympiad and the Asia-Pacific Linguistics Olympiads and has extensive experience in training students for national and international linguistics competitions. His problems were featured in many national Linguistics Olympiads (among which, Slovenia, Romania, Republic of Moldova, Hong Kong, China, India, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Japan), as well as for the Asia-Pacific Linguistics Olympiad and the International Linguistics Olympiad.

Vabimo vas na predavanje, ki ga bo na modulu Leksikologija, leksikografija, slovničarstvo imel Vlad A. Neacșu, v petek, 23. januarja 2026 ob 14. uri z naslovom:
Razvozlavanje jezikov brez njihovega poznavanja: lingvistična tekmovanja, ljudje in umetna inteligenca.
O PREDAVANJU:
Naloge lingvističnih olimpijad (LOP) so poseben tip nalog, v katerih so jezikovne značilnosti in pojavi predstavljeni v zakodirani obliki. Takšne naloge se uporabljajo na Mednarodni lingvistični olimpijadi in sorodnih nacionalnih tekmovanjih ter temeljijo na pomanjšanem korpusu stavkov, fraz ali besed, ki so reprezentativni za določene jezikovne pojave. Na podlagi teh podatkov mora reševalec izpeljati osnovni nabor slovničnih pravil jezika in nato uporabiti ta pravila za prevajanje novega nabora elementov. V zadnjih letih so veliki jezikovni modeli (LLM) dosegli izjemne rezultate pri številnih nalogah, povezanih z jezikom, kar odpira vprašanje, ali so takšni sistemi sposobni reševati tudi naloge lingvističnih olimpijad - in če so, na kakšen način. V predavanju predavatelj združuje dva pogleda: empirične raziskave o uspešnosti velikih jezikovnih modelov pri reševanju nalog lingvističnih olimpijad ter pedagoške izkušnje iz usposabljanja dijakov za Mednarodno lingvistično olimpijado. Razpravlja o tem, zakaj imajo trenutni sistemi umetne inteligence pogosto težave pri tovrstnih nalogah, čeprav se te nanašajo na jezik, za katerega sistem sicer daje vtis, kot da ga dobro obvlada. Pri tem se osredotoča na vprašanja pomnjenja in tokenizacije. S primerjavo pristopov ljudi in strojev k istim nalogam pokaže, da naloge lingvističnih olimpijad ponujajo edinstveno perspektivo za razlikovanje med prepoznavanjem vzorcev in dejanskim sklepanjem. Zaključi z razmislekom o pomenu teh ugotovitev za prihodnji razvoj umetne inteligence in za izobraževalno vrednost lingvističnih tekmovanj.
Predavanje bo potekalo v angleškem jeziku v sejni sobi ZRC SAZU, Novi trg 2, 1. nadstropje, Ljubljana.
O PREDAVATELJU:
Vlad A. Neacșu je doktorski študent na Inštitutu za lingvistiko »Iorgu Iordan – Alexandru Rosetti« Romunske akademije. Njegovo raziskovalno delo se osredotoča na uporabo nalog lingvističnih olimpijad v akademskih raziskavah. Je član Mednarodnega odbora Mednarodne lingvistične olimpijade ter Azijsko-pacifiške lingvistične olimpijade in ima bogate izkušnje z usposabljanjem dijakov za nacionalna in mednarodna lingvistična tekmovanja. Njegove naloge so bile uporabljene na številnih nacionalnih lingvističnih olimpijadah (med drugim v Sloveniji, Romuniji, Republiki Moldaviji, Hongkongu, na Kitajskem, v Indiji, Združenem kraljestvu, Braziliji in na Japonskem) ter na Azijsko-pacifiški lingvistični olimpijadi in Mednarodni lingvistični olimpijadi.
