Visit to the Network Rail National Records Centre & Archive

Some two years ago it was planned to arrange a visit to the above in conjunction with the York Signalling Centre, but at that time the delicate nature of industrial relations precluded this taking place. Since then, the DfT has ruled that Network Rail cannot allow non-essential visitors into the large Signalling Operating Centres. The Records Centre & Archive however does welcome visitors in limited numbers and the National Railway Museum in York makes an interesting add on for later.
The visit to the Network Rail National Records Centre, Audax Road, Clifton Moor, York, YO30 4US, will take place on Wednesday 26th June commencing at 11:00 am. There is no charge for this members-only visit but numbers are strictly limited to 15 persons.
If not travelling directly to the Centre by car, you can take a taxi from York station, estimated journey time about 15 minutes. There is also a bus service no. 6 from Station Avenue nearby, terminating at Tesco Clifton Moor, which is about 5 minutes’ walk from the NR Centre. However, in both cases be aware that road works and developments around the Station and Leeman Road are causing delays.
The Archivist, Vicky Stretch, hopes to locate some documents relating to NTT Red Wheel sites for our interest, as well as, for example, others dating back to Brunel and Stephenson. I have also asked that if when booking, members state an interest in a particular location or property, then if at all possible, she will also try to locate items of interest relating to your nominated site.
If you take a taxi, it would be worthwhile arranging a return collection, say at 12.45pm. If later visiting the NRM, note that the Station Hall and main Café are closed for the major re-building works, but other areas are open.
