The airport was built in a Neo-Classical style and was unique at the time in having the world's first air traffic control, the first airport terminal and the world's first airport hotel. For many years it was the home of Imperial Airways, Britain’s first national airline (the forerunner of British Airways), but post-war it was replaced by Heathrow as London’s major airport. That was mainly because it lacked sufficient room to allow it to be fully developed into an international airport, although it was operational right up until September 1959, after which it finally closed.
Whilst much of the site has been built over, nevertheless some of the terminal buildings are still identifiable, with the former terminal building and the former control tower having been integrated into a Visitors' Centre.
We are meeting up at 11am for a private guided tour lasting about an hour or so, which will allow us to learn all about its history and to explore the museum and gift shop.
There’s free parking on-site for those who need it and it’s also accessible by buses which connect with local railway stations including East Croydon.
Since we only have a limited number of places available on this visit, please apply to [email protected] as soon as possible if you’d like to come along. The charge for this visit will be £15 per head (£20 for non-members) and payment details together with final joining instructions will be sent out later to those who secure places on the tour.
