On the Harbour's Edge - The Archaeology of 15 Dowling StreetSpeaker: Megan Lawrence, New Zealand Heritage Properties
Excavations for Ōtepoti, the new building to be tenanted by ACC at 15 Dowling Street, encountered a swath of archaeological features, in particular structural remnants of the grand nineteenth century buildings on the property.
The site was occupied from 1848 and these buildings were occupied by early institutions such as the Presbyterian Church; later commercial operations including Sargood and Sons, the Standard Insurance Company; as well as organisations such as the Freethinkers and the Warehouseman and Commercial Travellers' club.
This talk will look at the historic land modification, building construction, and how the site was developed over time.
