Lucino Visconti’s unforgettable 1971 portrait of an elderly man’s obsession with a young boy he sees on the Venice Lido was one of the iconic art films of the 70s. Thomas Mann’s original novella set Gustav von Aschenbach as a writer; Visconti has him instead as a burnt-out composer seized by indecision in a time of cholera. Age, death and the nature of beauty are the themes here, all infused with Mahler’s 5th Symphony and the mesmerising performance of Dirk Bogarde. This is a Friends of Music at Wells Cathedral School free screening, with a collection.
