A Virtual Learning Café (VLC) run by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) as part of our YEF Evidence in Practice series.
About this Event

Colleagues from across policing are invited to join a virtual learning café run by the Youth Endowment Fund. This is part of our Evidence in Practice series, which sits alongside our Toolkit giving you opportunity to hear from policy experts and practitioners on relevant research and practice.

This session will focus on hotspots policing – a policing strategy that targets resources and activities to places where crime is most concentrated. There is a growing evidence-base which suggests that hotspots policing is likely to be effective at reducing violence. This is one of the reasons why in 2019 the Home Office announced that 18 police forces with the highest levels of serious violence would receive funding to deliver hotspot policing. The aim of this programme, called Grip, was to deter serious violence through visible patrol activity in hotspots whilst also adopting problem-oriented policing to address the root causes of violence.

Given the recent Government announcement that every police force in England and Wales will now receive funding to roll out hotspot policing to tackle both violence and anti-social behaviour, this session provides a great opportunity to learn about the findings from the Home Office’s recent evaluation of hotspots policing. We’ll also hear from the Hotspot Response Lead at Northumbria Police who will share lessons learned from implementing hotspot policing. Finally, the College of Policing will showcase the work they’re doing to support force areas with hotspot policing and problem-solving approaches.

We will be joined by:

  • Nick Morgan – Lead Analyst for the Grip Programme at the Home Office
  • Nicola Musgrove – Hotspot Response Lead at Northumbria Police
  • Rob Braddock - Senior Research Officer at the College of Policing

The event will run online using MS Teams on Thursday 16th May 2024, 13:00-14:00.
