2024 CINEMA SAVANT: ONDI TIMONER
When I sat down in the front row for the world premiere of DIG! at Sundance in 2004, I had no idea the impact a single film might have on the rest of my life, catapulting me into a love of nonfiction storytelling and the power of cinema to stir an audience. But I could tell in an instant that the filmmaker, a young Ondi Timoner, was up to something big. In the two decades since her coming out party, Timoner has been at the vanguard of an ever changing industry. Her obsession with documenting cultural disruptors mirrored by her own tendency to play with form and pursue new distribution possibilities. Her work is relentless, revealing, and reflective, telling us as much about ourselves as about her subjects. For her multiple decades of elevating nonfiction storytelling, we are proud to present to her our 2024 Cinema Savant Award. — AS
Ondi Timoner is an internationally-acclaimed filmmaker whose work focuses on “impossible visionaries.'' She has the rare distinction of being the only person to win the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice: for DIG! (2004), and WE LIVE IN PUBLIC (2009). Her most personal film, LAST FLIGHT HOME, about the extraordinary life and intentional death of her father, Eli Timoner, was nominated for an Emmy for Exceptional Merit, and received The Humanitas Award for Best Documentary. In 2023, Ondi and her brother David reunited to create DIG! **, enhanced, extended and reimagined cut of her cult classic film DIG!
As a leading filmmaker of the 2000s documentary explosion, she directed the award-winning feature COMING CLEAN (2020) about solutions to the opioid epidemic; BRAND: A SECOND COMING (2015) about provocateur Russell Brand; COOL IT (2010) about controversial economist Bjorn Lomborg and solutions to climate change; the award-winning JOIN US (2007) about mind control; the award-wining film THE NATURE OF THE BEAST (1994) about Bonnie Jean Foreshaw and the miscarriage of justice she endured, and most recently ALL GOD'S CHILDREN about an anti-racist partnership between Brooklyn's oldest baptist church and largest reform temple. Her fictional premiere MAPPLETHORPE starred Matt Smith as Robert Mapplethorpe.
Ondi is an Emmy and WGA-Nominated filmmaker who was awarded the 2022 Visionary Award for Observational Filmmaking at Doc NYC, Kodak's Auteur Award, the Maverick Award, the Rogue Award, and the No Limits Award. She serves as the Chair of Nonfiction for Special Projects at the DGA, is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the WGA, the IDA, Film Fatales & Women in Film.
"Timoner faces her life and work with fearless, full-frontal honesty." — Art & Object
"[DIG! **] is still as jarring, hilarious, and deeply strange as it ever was, and these new additions only make this shocking story even more astonishing." — Collider
ABOUT DIG! **
DIG!, Ondi Timoner's genre-topping rockumentary about two rival Gen-X bands and their journey to alt-rock glory, was a Sundance smash and an instant classic of the form when it premiered 20 years ago. Shot over nearly a decade, DIG! explores the collision of art and commerce through the star-crossed friendship and bitter rivalry of dueling '90s bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Through their loves and obsessions, gigs, arrests, and death threats, uppers and downers, and ultimately to their shot at mainstream success, they stage a self-proclaimed revolution in the music industry. With additional perspective and new footage, Timoner returns to her seminal Sundance Grand Jury prize winning film for DIG! ** — a bigger, better, crazier expanded reimagining of the original cut — to remind us of the brilliance of the original and make the case that, sometimes, more is better.
