About this Event

This presentation will highlight the work of poets who edited journals or magazines in the 1960s and ‘70s that combined visual art and poetry on their pages, creating venues where diverse modes of expression could meet and commingle. While not necessarily collaborations in the classic sense, these encounters proved fruitful and provocative. Charles Olson, as Rector of Black Mountain College in the 1950s, counseled self-publication in collaboration with artists and attention to the physical form of presentation. This led to a flowering of small-press publications and a “mimeo revolution,” beginning with Robert Creeley’s Divers Press and continuing with journals such as Angel Hair (edited by Anne Waldman and Lewis Warsh), Big Sky (edited by Bill Berkson), and Adventures in Poetry (edited by Larry Fagin), among others. Vincent Katz will discuss some of these interactions, showing images of these seminal publications and the possibilities they allow.

Vincent Katz is a poet, critic and translator. He is the author of the poetry collections Broadway for Paul, Southness and Swimming Home, as well as The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius. He has curated exhibitions on Black Mountain College and Rudy Burckhardt and recently co-curated a retrospective of the films of Isabelle Huppert at Film Forum in New York. His writing on contemporary art and poetry has appeared in Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Poetry Project Newsletter. He lives in New York City.
