“The Prophets” by Robert Jones Jr (2021)with Marco Astolfi
Samuel and Isaiah, two enslaved young men, work on a cotton plantation in antebellum Mississippi.
Inseparable since childhood, they grow up and become lovers. Their secret romance is a refuge to the daily brutality they have to endure, but, once it’s discovered, it upsets the balance of their environment and has consequences for everyone else living around, both black and white. The story goes back and forth in time to explore the life of their ancestors in a part of pre-colonial Africa where the notion of gender was fluid. Although wedded to its period, the novel speaks to our times, exploring the questions that have plagued America since its founding. It’s an ode to black queer love, a non-utilitarian love that, at its most radical, becomes synonymous with freedom.
The book is available in English and German. The discussion on the evening will be in English (with translation from and to German if necessary).

Samuel und Isaiah, zwei versklavte junge Männer, arbeiten auf einer Baumwollplantage im Mississippi vor dem Bürgerkrieg. Seit ihrer Kindheit unzertrennlich, wachsen sie gemeinsam auf und werden später Liebhaber. Ihre geheime Liebe ist ein Zufluchtsort vor der täglichen Brutalität, die sie ertragen müssen, aber sobald sie entdeckt wird, bringt sie das Gleichgewicht ihrer Umgebung durcheinander. Das hat Konsequenzen für alle anderen, die in der Nähe leben, sowohl für Schwarze als auch für Weiße. Die Geschichte wechselt zwischen verschiedenen Zeitebene um auch das Leben ihrer Vorfahren in einem Teil des vorkolonialen Afrikas zu erkunden, in dem der Begriff des Geschlechts fließend war. Obwohl der Roman mit seiner Zeit verbunden ist, spricht er zu unserer Zeit und untersucht die Fragen, die Amerika seit seiner Gründung geplagt haben. Es ist eine Ode an die schwarze, queere Liebe, eine nicht-nützliche Liebe, die in ihrer radikalsten Form zum Synonym für Freiheit wird.
Das Buch ist auf Englisch und Deutsch vorhanden. Die Diskussion werden wir auf Englisch führen (mit Übersetzung vom und ins Deutsche, wenn nötig).

Die Bücher sind sowohl in englischer als auch in deutscher Sprache erhältlich.
