With more than 100 years of history, which makes it the oldest club in the first division and the second oldest in Spain, Athletic has won 8 League titles and 24 King's Cup titles, which defines it as one of the clubs that has won the most titles on the football scene. Athletic Club has reached the final of the Copa del Rey on 39 occasions, making it the third team with the most appearances in this competition, behind only FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Athletic won the King's Cup 40 years ago, in 1984 (they also won the league). The final was played at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, on 5 May 1984, and Athletic Bilbao beat Barcelona 1–0 with a goal by Endika.
