Inspiration and Rivalry: Connections between Viennese and Budapest Sculpture in the Second Half of the 19th CenturyLecture
In the first half of the 19th century, major sculptural commissions in Hungary were often carried out by Austrian or Italian artists. However, as academic art education became more valued, Hungarian sculptors increasingly pursued studies in Munich and Vienna. The metal foundries in these cities played a significant role in producing public monuments by Hungarian artists.
By the 1880s, a new generation of Hungarian sculptors emerged, capable of fulfilling the growing number of commissions in the dualist era. While Hungarian artists began receiving major commissions, Vienna remained an essential center for their education. Many of the leading figures in Hungarian sculpture studied under renowned professors such as Caspar von Zumbusch and Edmund von Hellmer in Vienna.
This lecture by art historian Dániel Borovi explores the complex, mutually inspiring, yet competitive relationship between Viennese and Budapest sculptors. It examines how Hungarian artists both admired and rivaled their Austrian counterparts and highlights cases where Austrian sculptors’ works appeared in Budapest and vice versa.
