In his extensive and multi-layered oeuvre, John Miller repeatedly counteracts the longings of Western consumer society. With his eclectic approach and his skeptical as well as ironic artistic strategy, he explores the autonomy of the work of art while examining the myth of artistic genius.
The result is an intelligent and humorous commentary on identity, economy, culture and socio-political issues constantly questioning established values. John Millers program for Videoart at Midnight will feature Tracking (2023), a filmic essay about tracking in various forms, which include hunting, surveillance, and cinema. It juxtaposes these with dream narratives. Augmenting Tracking will be Millers mannequin videos as well as collaborations with Richard Hoeck and Takuji Kogo.
John Miller (born in 1954, Cleveland) is an artist and writer based in New York and Berlin. He has had retrospective exhibitions at La Magasin in Grenoble, the Kunstverein in Hamburg, the Kunsthalle Zurich, the ICA Miami, the Museum in Bellpark, Kriens, Switzerland, the Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin, and the Kunsthalle Bielefeld.
His publications include Mike Kelley: Educational Complex (Afterall Books, 2015), The Ruin of Exchange: Selected Writings, and The Price Club: Selected Writings (1977-1998) (both JRP-Ringier and the Consortiums Positions series) as well as Reconstructing a Public Sphere (Walther König Verlag, 2018). Miller is a Professor of Professional Practice in Barnard Colleges Art History Department.
