Explore 19th century mourning traditions with Ottawa artist Cindy Stelmackowich and learn how Victorians transformed hair into pieces of art to commemorate their loved ones. During the hands-on workshop, you will use hair and wire to create a small sculptural piece inspired by historical mourning artefacts. Participants are welcome to bring hair they wish to work with, but synthetic hair and all required supplies will be provided.Cindy Stelmackowich’s work explores the materiality of the body. In 2011, Cindy was artist-in-residence at the Bytown Museum where she researched the Museum's mourning and Victorian hair artefacts. The solo exhibition that followed featured hair sculptures and installations. Cindy’s artworks are in the collection of the Canada Council Art Bank, the Ottawa Art Gallery, and York University.

Au cours de cet atelier pratique, vous créerez une petite pièce sculpturale inspirée d’objets de deuil historiques à l’aide de cheveux et de fil de fer. Les participants peuvent apporter les cheveux avec lesquels ils souhaitent travailler, mais des cheveux synthétiques et tout le matériel nécessaire seront fournis.
Le travail de Cindy Stelmackowich explore la matérialité du corps. En 2011, Cindy a été artiste résidente au Musée Bytown, une fonction qui lui a permis d’étudier les artéfacts en cheveux du musée associés au deuil et à l’époque victorienne. L’exposition solo qui allait suivre réunissait des sculptures et des installations faites de cheveux. Les œuvres de Cindy font partie des collections de la Banque d’art du Conseil des Arts du Canada, de la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa et de l’Université York.
