For our next meeting on the 17th of September we are excited to be joined by CROC QLD’s co-founder Amanda French and spokesmen Dan Kemp and Jack Gatto! A little bit about CROC QLD:
Community Representation of Crocodiles (CROC QLD) is a grassroots conservation initiative formed in 2023 in response to increasing human-crocodile conflict across Far North Queensland. Our mission is to ensure factual, science-based, and culturally respectful representation of estuarine crocodiles in the public sphere.
As a volunteer-led platform, CROC QLD brings together scientists, wildlife educators, and media professionals with experience in crocodile ecology, husbandry, tourism, and policy. In just two years, we’ve contributed expert commentary to more than 200 media stories, successfully advocated for legislative reform to strengthen crocodile protections under the Nature Conservation Act, and partnered with First Nations communities to shape culturally grounded safety and conservation initiatives.
We are also a stakeholder on the Queensland Government’s Crocodile Roundtable, and we’ve partnered with organisations like the Environmental Defenders Office and Crime Stoppers to build stronger community education and accountability in croc country- turning the tide from fear to a healthy respect.
As usual the night will consist of two presentations by the team that will cover:
The power of media to shape public perception and the importance of fact-based reporting to support both conservation and community safety.
Debunking false narratives about crocodiles and placing crocodiles in proper ecological and cultural context.
Why reckless behaviour and human complacency are the real drivers of conflict in croc country.
The need for stronger policies to curb risky human behaviour, not punish protected species.
A transparent look at how crocodiles are currently managed in Queensland—and what urgently needs to change.
Current research and alternatives to culling crocodiles.
The totemic and cultural significance of crocodiles to First Nations peoples, and the importance of inclusive conservation approaches and engagement with crocodile management.
As usual we will kick things off at around 7.15pm at the Anglers Tavern with the auction and on the night we will have some custom VHS/Croc QLD t-shirts available as well. Entry to our meetings is free and all are welcome!
