On December 7 & 8, Vernon Street Studios will host their Fall/Winter Open Studios. As one of the oldest open studios events in the Greater Boston area, Vernon Street Studios has been recognized as a community well known throughout the area for the quality of work produced by artists with established reputations as well as exciting newcomers. The Open Studios event allows attendees to learn about the creative process, interact with artists in the spaces where they create, purchase original artwork, and discover new talent. This year marks our 50th Anniversary and to mark this momentous occasion we will be having a special exhibit in December at the Nave Gallery in Somerville as well as other smaller events throughout the Fall.It will be an exciting celebration that will highlight the evolution and transitions this creative landmark has encountered through the years. During this showcase for the arts, mid-career and emerging artists working across a broad spectrum of fine art styles and craft media – including painting, photography,
print-making, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, furniture, and ceramics – will exhibit and sell their work ….just in time for the holiday season.
The Vernon Street Studio History
The historic Rogers Foam Building, built in 1897, has always been the place for creative innovation. For decades, it was the home of the old Derby Desk company until it was bought by Jim Rogers in the late 1940’s who, then, founded the Rogers Foam Company (manufacturer of the once famed iconic Nerf Balls).
In 1973, a select group of prolific local artists (that included the likes of Clara Wainwright and Maud Morgan) went to the Rogers Family to propose the
idea of having artists share the spaces in the upper lofts of their building– and they said yes! While it was a lot of hard work, Vernon Street Studios officially opened their doors to the public in February 1974.
The legacy of their vision and stalwart tenacity continues today. What started as a modest collective of about 20 has grown to over 100 hundred artists. This is an amazing feat that merits both recognition and celebration. So, join us as we raise a glass and commemorate this incredible milestone.
