Vernon Go Green is a town event that celebrates and focuses on community, environment, and sustainability. This family-friendly event provides opportunities to clean our streets and trails, and learn about our history and future and the Live Here, Love Trees grant. We will have live music provided by Kitchen Ceili, a historical tour with the Vernon Historical Society, a poetry workshop, Touch-a-Truck with a Vernon Recycle truck, Paint a pot and flower seed activity, Farm to School small-scale produce market, a Swap Shop, and so much more! This FREE event will be held at Rockville Public Library, with a few offsite activities, 10am – 2pm on April 26th (rain date May 3rd). Below is the detailed schedule of all the events.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Clean Up Campaign (8:30-10am at Library) – Help beautify our town by participating in collaborative neighborhood trash pickup. Planned routes are along Union Street to Prospect Street and East Main Street.
Tree Tour of Talcott and Central Parks (10:30-11:30am at Library) – Experience the history of Vernon’s trees, learn about the Dutch Elm Disease and the 1938 Hurricane which greatly affected several Vernon parks and trees.
Rails to Trails Opening: Clean Up/Maintenance (9am meet @ Church Street Parking lot) – Join the Vernon Greenways Volunteers, Vernon Firefighters and Parks & Recreation staff to get our treasured trails ready for visitors - participate in a collaborative Trail maintenance and clean-up event.
Live Here-Love Trees Educational Workshop (11am-12pm at Library) – Enjoy a free educational workshop to learn about the benefits of trees provide, the importance of native species trees and how to care for them, and see if you’re eligible for a FREE tree!
Live Music by Kitchen Ceili (12-1pm at Library) – Enjoy live, toe-tapping Irish music!
Welcome Remarks (1-1:30pm at Library) – Welcoming Remarks by Local and State dignitaries: DEEP Officials; Les Welker, Wildlife Management Institute Urban and Community Forestry; Mayor Daniel A. Champagne, Town of Vernon.
Live Here – Love Trees: Tree Planting (1:30-2pm at Central Park) – Help kick-off the Live Here-Love Trees program with its first official planting.
Live Here – Love Trees: Informational Session (1-2pm at Library) – Learn about the Live Here – Love Trees Program and Overview of progress, actions to date and planned actions.
ALL DAY EVENTS:
Water-Wise & Pollinators – Become more “Pollinator” and “Water” wise. Get information on the importance of pollinators and smart water usage for efficient irrigation of lawns, gardens, and rain barrels. Free Sustainable CT tote – while supplies last.
Swap Shop – Visit our Swap Shop table, where fashion meets sustainability! Bring in your gently used clothes and swap them for something new to you. Don’t have any items to trade? No problem! Everything in the shop is just $2. All donations and items remaining the end of the event will be donated to a local charitable organization.
Touch-A-Truck – Stop by Vernon’s Automatic-Side Loader Recycle Truck and learn more about Vernon’s Refuse and Recycling Program, the value of recycling, and what items are/are not recyclable. Kids can enjoy coloring books and temporary tattoos – while supplies last.
Seed Lending Library & Paint-A-Pot – Browse the seed lending library and take home flower, vegetable and herb seed packets. Paint a pot in the Children’s Dept. and take home seeds to plant (while supplies last).
Poet-TREE – Express your thoughts by creating short poems to add to the ‘’Poet-Tree” display. Listen to live poetry at 11am!
Farm to School – Discover the importance of fresh, locally sourced foods with a small-scale produce market & Recipe Cards. Choose produce from local farms and pair it with a recipe card to try at home!
Live Here-Love Trees Display – Learn about the Live-Here Love Trees program and see if you qualify for a Free tree and tree care and education. Pick up your free information and your “Live Here – Love Trees” Tee Shirt (while supplies last).
Strong Farm Mascot, Clucky the Chicken and corn hole game
Leo’s Hot Dog Cart – Stop by for a quick bite! (purchase only)
