Galleri Format is delighted to present Matter of Days, an exhibition by Berlin based artist Shirin Sabahi.

The exhibition is born out of Format’s invitation to Sabahi to revisit her early photographic path leading to her later site-specific installations. Bringing together still and moving images made since the 2000s—majority of which are presented for the first time—Matter of Days plays on the interconnectedness of space, memory, and chance. This theme resonates throughout the exhibition, testing the photographic record’s ability to bridge various conceptions of time.

Shirin Sabahi studied industrial design and photography in Tehran and received a Master of Fine Arts from Malmö Art Academy in 2009. Her projects engage with built space, tracing the material production, contextualization, and interpretation of artefacts and places over time, and prompting historical, economic, and power questions. Working with cinematic and sculptural assemblage, her installations and exhibitions combine appropriated and newly-produced photographic, sculptural, and spatial materials that come alongside or in place of the actual film.

Recent solo and group exhibitions and screenings include at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2024); Klosterruine Berlin (2023); Kunstverein Hamburg (2023); Goya Curtain, Tokyo (2023); Bergen Assembly (2022); V&A Museum, London (2021); KW Berlin (2021); Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2021); Kunstmuseum Stavanger (2021); Bétonsalon, Paris (2020); Broad Art Museum, Michigan (2020); Beirut Art Center (2018); Centro Botín, Santander (2019); Jameel Art Center, Dubai (2019); Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (2017); and Tokyo Arts&Space (2017) among others. Her monograph, Pocket Folklore, was published by Edith-Russ-Haus, Oldenburg and Roma Publications, Amsterdam in 2019.
