𝐘𝐚'𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐞 - يقبرني
Monia Ben Hamouda's exhibition ‘Ya'aburnee’ at Galerie Selma Feriani in Tunis is titled after the Arabic concept that translates as ‘you bury me’, reflecting the selfless wish for a loved one to outlive oneself. Love and sacrifice, omnipresent in the exhibition, explore the complex ideas of language, history and understanding through an installation that spans the three floors of the gallery, combining painting, sculpture and sound pieces, blurring our relationship with space. These recordings from two mosques create a haunting landscape that blends religious calls to prayer with urgent public announcements. It transforms the familiar sounds of the call to prayer into an alarming melody, reflecting a complex interplay between spirituality and the pressing need for information in times of crisis. The installation evokes discomfort and awareness, as the low vibrations resonate throughout the gallery. Ben Hamouda aims to capture the distinct auditory landscape of Arabic countries, emphasizing how these sounds shape cultural identity and perception. The result is a powerful commentary on the nature of communication and the emotional burden carried by these calls in our troubled area.

Born in Milan in 1991
Ben Hamouda is a Tunisian-Italian visual artist, working between al-Qayrawan and Milan. Following the belief that each individual is inextricably connected to their family tree and the psychological universe of their ancestors, she attempts to master her influences in a contemporary and constantly changing landscape. Born into a Muslim community as the daughter of an Islamic calligrapher, she navigates and confronts her generational heritage through what she calls a shamanic process – creating works that act as gestural exorcisms of the expectations placed upon her by tradition and the politicized present, drawing their power from the urgency of expression. Her visual language, which translates into a broad range of formal approaches, is steeped in cultural-religious symbology and rituals.
She won the Maxxi Bvlgari Prize 2024 and earned a BFA at Brera Academy of Fine Art in Milan.
She was awarded with the Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation Grant (2024), the Fondazione Merz Prize (2024), the Museion Audience Award (2024), the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2022), the Italian Council for Contemporary Art (2023; 2024).
Her work is featured in public collections such: MAXXI, Rome; FRAC Bretagne, Rennes; Museion, Bozen; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; MACRO, Rome; FRAC Corsica, Corse.
