Three great bands. Velvet Star
Velvet Star are the latest musical phenomenon to hit the capital.
Enjoying a growing media profile, the band emerged from the veil of obscurity to rock the socks off the city earlier this year and will continue to do so until they discover the secret of gummy bear juice.
That aside, their rich art-rock sonic textures blending with indigo tones of sheer passion may win over your ears, and your heart.
Agatha Pantha
Expect the unexpected from Wellington-based Agatha Pantha - a folk/rock four-piece whose sounds range from bouncing rhythms to dark, tangled ballads to anthemic rock numbers. Fronted by singer and ukelele player Mo Blishen, and filled out with Kent Hogan on guitar, Nik Straughier on bass and Sam King on drums, Agatha Pantha is the product of four unlikely allies joined by musical fortitude and lived experience, here to provide a therapeutic soundtrack to the every day.
Planet
"Bagpipes, excitement and Rock n' Roll".
Words you don't often hear in the same sentence.
Planet mixes traditional bagpipe airs with post punk riffs and a dollop of vaudevillian good humour. It could be world music, it could be underground indie rock. It could be psychedelic folk music. It can even get a bit trance-y. But it's always approachable and certainly a lot of fun.
