Do Paláce Akropolis v úterý 25. března zavítají umělci propojení britským labelem Gondwana!Gondwana showcase: Vega Trails (UK), Kessoncoda (UK), Paradise Cinema (UK), DJ Mari (JP)
Label v roce 2008 založil ve svém rodném Manchesteru trumpetista, DJ a skladatel Matthew Halsall a shromáždil na něm hudebníky, kteří volnomyšlenkářsky navazují na tradici moderního jazzu. K labelu patří např. Hania Rani nebo Portico Quartet. V rámci Gondwana label showcase se tentokrát představí projekt Vega Trails, v němž se potkali právě členové Portico Quartet a Mammal Hands, dále nová dvojice Kessoncoda nebo projekt Paradise Cinema, který založil další člen Portico Quartet Jack Wyllie. Celý večer doprovodí svým vizuálním uměním Jozef Čabo.

✨ Vega Trails je nový projekt hráče na kontrabas Mila Fitzpatricka známého ze sestavy kultovního londýnského tělesa Portico Quartet. Během pandemického lockdownu si ujel na hudbě, která se vyžívá ve volném prostoru a řídkosti, kvalitách, které našel třeba na deskách Charlieho Hadena. Od začátku ale také věděl, že potřebuje stejně naladěného parťáka, kterého našel v saxofonistovi Jordanu Smartovi, který hraje s Mammal Hands nebo Sunda Arc. Na debutové desce Vega Trails nazvané Tremors in the Static nicméně Smart hraje i na další dechové nástroje včetně perské koncové flétny Ney. Společně s kontrabasem se rodí na nahrávce Vega Trails nový, magický zvukový svět.
✨ Bubeník Tom Sunney a klavírista Filip Sowa tvoří západolondýnské duo Kessoncoda a přirozeným mícháním akustické tradice a elektroniky navazují na tvorbu svých labelových kolegů jako jsou Portico Quartet nebo GoGo Penguin. Na jejich skladbách je ale slyšet, že mají rádi také Squarepushera, Radiohead nebo Clarka, jejich hudba přináší zjitřené filmové emoce i zklidněné melodické pasáže. Hudbu natáčí v Tomově studiu na zahradě a letos v létě vydali skvělé debutové album Outerstate.
✨ Pod hlavičkou Paradise Cinema vystupuje další člen Portico Quartet - multiinstrumentalista Jack Wyllie. V projektu ho doprovází Khadim Mbaye, Tons Sambe a Laurence Pike a na eponymní debutové desce nahrávané v Dakaru společně objevují ozvuky afrických rytmů Mbalax. Aktuální deska returning, dream přichází po čtyřech letech a kvarteto v ní navzuje na různé podoby world music, ambientu a minimalismu tvůrců jako jsou Jon Hassell, Terry Riley, Don Cherry nebo Midori Takada. Inspirací je také fyzika nebo science fiction.
✨ V průběhu odpoledne proběhne také v Paláci Akropolis workshop se spoluzakladatelem labelu Gondwana, Danielem Halsallem a večer celý label showcase stylově zakončí na Malé scéně japonská djka Mari, která se soustředí na zasněnou, psychedelickou nebo vyloženě surreálnou hudbu ze své domoviny, kterou nabídne ve svém exkluzivním vinylovém setu.
✨Jozef Čabo je profesionální světelný designér a audiovizuální umělec. Absolvoval střední uměleckou školu animované tvorby v Bratislavě (obor Animovaná tvorba) a studoval na Filmové akademii múzických umění v Praze (Centrum audiovizuálních studií). Věnuje se návrhům světelného designu a technickému zajištění pro festivaly jako Pohoda, Grape, Electronic Beats, Next Festival, Sharpe, Urban Market. Spolupracoval na dokumentárních filmech Libertas, Zlatá zem (Cena Literárního fondu – MFF), The Blank Stare, a navrhoval koncertní turné pro interprety jako FVLCRVM, Jana Kirschner, Para, The Blackwood Incident aj.

On Tuesday 25 March, artists connected to the famous British label Gondwana will visit Palác Akropolis in Prague. Founded in 2008 in Manchester by trumpeter, DJ and composer Matthew Halsall, it brings together musicians who freely draw on the tradition of modern jazz. The label includes the likes of Hania Rani and the Portico Quartet. The Gondwana label showcase will feature Vega Trails - a project, which brings together members of Portico Quartet and Mammal Hands - as well as the new duo Kessoncoda and the Paradise Cinema, project founded by another Portico Quartet member Jack Wyllie.

✨ Vega Trails is the new project of double bass player Milo Fitzpatrick, known from the line-up of the cult London ensemble Portico Quartet. During the lockdown pandemonium, he hit upon music that revels in open space and sparseness, qualities he found on records by Charlie Haden, for example. But he also knew from the start that he needed a similarly attuned partner, which he found in saxophonist Jordan Smart, who plays with Mammal Hands and Sunda Arc. However, on his debut Vega Trails album, Tremors in the Static, Smart plays other wind instruments, including the Persian end flute Ney. Together with the double bass, a new, magical sound world is born on Vega Trails.
✨ Drummer Tom Sunney and pianist Filip Sowa form the West London duo Kessoncoda, naturally blending acoustic tradition and electronica to build on the work of their labelmates such as Portico Quartet and GoGo Penguin. But you can hear on their tracks that they also like Squarepusher, Radiohead and Clark, their music delivering heightened cinematic emotions and soothed melodic passages. They record their music in Tom's studio in the garden and this summer they released their excellent debut album Outerstate.
✨ Another member of the Portico Quartet, multi-instrumentalist Jack Wyllie, performs under the name of Paradise Cinema. He's accompanied on the project by Khadim Mbaye, Tons Sambe and Laurence Pike and together they explore echoes of African Mbalax rhythms on their eponymous debut album recorded in Dakar. The current record, Returning, Dream, comes four years on and sees the quartet drawing on various forms of world music, ambient and minimalism from the likes of Jon Hassell, Terry Riley, Don Cherry and Midori Takada. Physics and science fiction are also inspirations.
✨ During the afternoon, there will also be a workshop with Daniel Halsall, co-founder of the Gondwana label, and the evening's label showcase will be rounded off in style on the Small Stage by Japanese DJ Mari, who focuses on dreamy, psychedelic or downright surreal music from her homeland, which she will offer in her exclusive vinyl set.
✨ Jozef Čabo is a professional lighting designer and audiovisual artist. He graduated from the High School of Animation in Bratislava (Animation Production) and studied at the Film Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Centre of Audiovisual Studies). He is involved in lighting design and technical support for festivals such as Pohoda, Grape, Electronic Beats, Next Festival, Sharpe, Urban Market. He has collaborated on the documentary films Libertas, Zlatá zem (Golden Earth - Literary Fund Award - IFF), The Blank Stare, and designed concert tours for artists such as FVLCRVM, Jana Kirschner, Para, The Blackwood Incident, etc.
