Even by Mahler’s standards, his Symphony No.8, nicknamed ‘Symphony of a Thousand’, is a work of immense proportions. Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s (RPO) Music Director Designate, is joined onstage at the magnificent Royal Albert Hall by a stellar line-up of soloists, massed choirs and an organ, for what promises to be a titanic performance of this rarely heard masterpiece. Written in two halves, Part I employs the text of a 9th century hymn ‘Veni Creator Spiritus’ (‘Come Creator Spirit’), and Part II – inspired by the final scene of Goethe’s Faust – sees Faust’s soul rescued from the clutches of the Devil, then ascend to Heaven in a blaze of glory.

MAHLER Symphony No.2, ‘Resurrection’
Vasily Petrenko Conductor
Elizabeth Watts Soprano
Jennifer Johnston Mezzo-Soprano
Philharmonia Chorus
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Based on Mahler’s fascination with life and death, Vasily Petrenko’s sensational symphonic series continues with his Symphony No.2, ‘Resurrection’ – arguably the composer’s best-known symphony. From the first movement, this is an aural tour de force for the listener, with off-stage brass and percussion adding curiosity and drama; concluding with Mahler’s affirmation of the Resurrection and the beauty of the afterlife. Bachtrack hailed Vasily Petrenko’s last RPO performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.2 for “The sheer contrast between each movement, the ferocity of the orchestra and the dynamism of Vasily Petrenko made for a whirlwind of a performance – dangerous, dark and occasionally tranquil.”

Mahler’s love of nature imbues his Symphony No.3 in the final concert of Vasily Petrenko’s series at the Royal Albert Hall. Written from his purpose-built composing hut that overlooked the Austrian Alpine vistas, this six-movement, colossal work evokes a canvas of life and a reflection of nature’s beauty, with the huge orchestra and choir bringing to life – musically – the blooms of the forest and the silence of the night; culminating with a stunning finale that embraces – above all else – the state of heavenly love.
