About this Event
Bukit Brown is at risk of disappearing. A large portion of this historical landscape has already been carved away to form the current Lornie Highway. This site was put on the World Monument Watch in 2014 and remains vulnerable to the redevelopment needs of Singapore.
Bukit Brown is so much more than just a cemetery. It is at once a study in the social and cultural history of Singapore and a green oasis in the heart of a densely developed urban environment.
A site that physically manifest the deep ties and relationships between Southern China and South East Asia, the cultural norms of the Hokkiens and Teochews, as well as the Peranakans, with graves featuring details that tell us more than what we see on the surface, stories that inform us about the past, the people who made a difference, the impact that can still be felt today!
Join us on a heritage walk that will change the way you see Bukit Brown. This is our national treasure and it is worth protecting.
We offer this heritage walk for free as a way of giving back to the community. We trust you would not take a ticket and not show up.
Please take note of the following:
- The meeting point is at the Platform at Hill 1 (scroll down for instructions on how to get there).
- This walk is scheduled for 60-90 minutes depending on the group size and walking pace.
- Choose attire that keeps you cool and comfortable for walking. Long pants, long sleeves and covered shoes are recommended.
- Bring an umbrella or raincoat as this is a rain-or-shine event.
- Have your water bottles with you to stay hydrated.
