Vanessa Rubin, a Cleveland-born jazz vocalist, is celebrated for her crystalline voice, warmth, and playful charisma. With influences from her Trinidadian/Caribbean heritage, her Louisiana-born father, and jazz legends like Nancy Wilson and Carmen McRae, Rubin blends tradition with adventurous storytelling. Across eight albums, she’s explored jazz standards, blues, and original compositions, earning acclaim for her nuanced interpretations of works by Tadd Dameron, John Coltrane, and Stevie Wonder.Her journey began with a pivotal performance of "God Bless the Child" during college, leading to early gigs in Cleveland and eventual mentorships in New York with jazz greats. Signing with Novus/RCA Records in the 1990s, she released five albums, including Soul Eyes and I’m Glad There Is You: A Tribute to Carmen McRae, with later works on Telarc Jazz and her own label. Rubin also earned accolades for her acting in Yesterdays: An Evening with Billie Holiday.
As a performer, educator, and producer, Rubin remains a global jazz ambassador, passionately dedicated to sharing rich musical stories and inspiring the next generation.
