We return to an old favourite - Vane Tempest Hall. Opened in the 1860s as the Gilesgate Militia Barracks, it served as the headquarters and barracks for several Army units. In 1884, the building was repurposed as a smallpox hospital. The former stables became the ‘dead room’ where the deceased were moved to. The main halls were used as sick rooms.
During WWII, the building was used as a watchtower to spot enemy planes flying towards Durham.
Today, Vane Tempest Hall is one of the most paranormal active locations in the North East of England. Singing voices, a soldier and a strange mist caught on camera have all been reported in here.
