Vance Joy is the stage name of James Gabriel Keogh, who was born on December 1, 1987, in Melbourne, Australia. He burst onto the worldwide music scene when Riptide, a single from his debut EP God Loves You When You're Dancing, reached No. 6 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Riptide was voted the No. 1 song of the year on the Triple J Hottest 100 list for 2013. His stage name comes from a minor character in Bliss, a novel by Australian writer Peter Carey.

Before he came to be an accomplished singer/songwriter with tour dates all over the world, Vance Joy almost took a couple of other career paths. He was a star defender for the Coburg Tigers, an Australian rules football team now called the Coburg Football Club, during 2008 and 2009. He was so good as a footballer that he was named the best first-year player on the team in 2008. He also played for Coburg for five seasons before his music career took off. He was also almost a lawyer. Keogh studied law for a period of six years and actually earned an arts-law degree from Monash University. If he decided at some point between tours to do a traineeship for a year, he would be fully qualified to practice law in Australia.
