About this Event
A Fair Shake is expanding its programming in schools in underserved communities and needs more therapy dog teams --caring humans with great dogs. Therapy dog also visit in hospitals, assisted living facilities, participate in de-stress events at colleges and help young students learn to read. Whatever your interest, there is need.
Volunteering with your dog is one of the most rewarding ways to give back. You know how much your dog brings to your life -- as a therapy dog team you can bring that difference to those around you.
Sunday April 6th bring your dog for an initial assessment. Therapy dogs come in all different breeds and sizes. What matters is that they are highly social with people, confident, good in new situations, and follow basic commands. (Note: there are a limited number of spaces for dogs, so please sign-up early.)
How to Get Started: We will discuss training and testing options. There are two major therapy dog organizations in New York City -- Pet Partners, the largest national therapy dog organization, and The Good Dog Foundation, the largest regional therapy dog organization. At the open house, we will explain the process for each.
Give Back: This event is sponsored by A Fair Shake for Youth, which offers structured hands-on therapy dog programs to help students in underserved communities build greater empathy and self-esteem. Jane Kopelman of All About Dogs, consultant to Memorial Sloan Kettering's Caring Canine Program will also be hosting and talking about opportunities at MSK.
