Free, interactive talks on astronomy and math research, hosted monthly at Theodore Jacobsen Observatory by the UW STEM Public Outreach Team!
About this Event

You're invited to spend an evening exploring the wonders of our universe, and the latest ways scientists observe it!

This free, ~45 minute presentation will take you on a journey through the history of astronomy from Galileo's time to discover how gravity can open a whole new window to our understanding of the universe.

During this presentation, we will explore questions like...

What happens when black holes collide? How can we "look" at something that's invisible?
Why do scientists want to "listen" for gravitational waves from space, rather than Earth?
What else can gravitational waves reveal about the universe, beyond black holes?

This event is one of recurring public talks on a rotation of current astronomy and math research topics, hosted by the UW STEM Public Outreach Team (SPOT) in the beautiful setting of UW's historic Theodore Jacobsen Observatory.

Book your free tickets soon! We are limited to 40 available seats!

Please note: This event requires a minimum of 20 RSVPs. If fewer than 20 people are signed up, the presentation will be canceled and all registered attendees will be notified in advance.

About the UW STEM Public Outreach Team (SPOT)

We are a cadre of trained ambassadors who provide free presentations about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) topics to K-14 and community audiences. Our mission? To make STEM fun, exciting, and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, as well as provide entry points and relatable role models for students interested in majoring in physics or astronomy.

Our ambassadors are typically UW or community college students, many of whom are majoring in astronomy/physics and are involved in research!

More information can be found on our website.

What are the topics for future events?

We currently offer a rotation of three presentation topics:

  1. Tuning into Einstein's Universe - Gravitational wave observations with the NANOGrav Observatory
  2. NASA LISA Ambassadors - Gravitational wave observations with the upcoming space-based LISA mission
  3. Tessellating with Polygons - Geometry research with recent contributions for UW Bothell researchers!
