Join us in the auditorium at 2 p.m. for a presentation about the USS Indianapolis by Jeff Ortiz, nephew of crew member Orlando Ortiz. This event is free with museum general admission. On August 17, the Detroit Historical Museum will install a long-lost memorial plaque in a private ceremony honoring Michigan sailors who perished when the USS Indianapolis was attacked and sank in July 1945. Originally created to commemorate the lives of those who served and sacrificed, the plaque was recently rediscovered within the Detroit Historical Society’s collection. It is a poignant tribute to the men aboard the Indianapolis from Michigan—the state that sent more sailors to the doomed cruiser than any other—and will be on permanent display as part of the Detroit: "The Arsenal of Democracy" exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum.
